About this role

Cypress Hills Local Development Corporation (CHLDC) seeks a part-time Community Kitchen Porter to assist in managing their community kitchen facility. This role supports the Director and ensures smooth daily operations at the Chestnut Commons Community Center in Brooklyn, New York.

Primary duties include deep cleaning and maintenance of the kitchen during scheduled shifts, such as washing dishes, cleaning equipment, sweeping, mopping, and restocking inventory. The porter also follows opening and closing procedures, ensuring equipment maintenance and compliance with NYC Department of Health regulations.

The porter supports food entrepreneurs with equipment use and maintains a safe, positive, professional working environment consistent with agency values. They represent CHLDC to stakeholders including elected officials, city agencies, and community organizations, fostering effective relationships.

Requirements

  • Flexible availability, particularly early morning, evenings and weekends.
  • Relevant facilities maintenance experience required; commercial kitchen equipment maintenance expertise preferred.
  • Knowledge of NYC business regulatory environment.
  • Valid NYC DOH Food Handlers License.
  • Must pass background check.
  • Proficiency in navigating Google Workspace and basic email management.
  • Bilingual (Spanish, Bengali, or Mandarin) preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Oversee the Community Kitchen when the Director is not present.
  • Maintain a safe, positive, professional working environment consistent with agency values.
  • Provide deep cleaning and maintenance including washing dishes, cleaning equipment, sweeping, mopping, and restocking inventory.
  • Accurately follow opening and closing procedures for the kitchen and community center.
  • Ensure compliance with NYC Department of Health and other regulations.
  • Support food entrepreneurs with equipment use and access during their shifts.
  • Represent CHLDC professionally to all stakeholders including elected officials, city agencies, and community organizations.
